Positive Psychology and Work Stress: When Stressors Make you Grow

We are running around saying that we are ‘so busy’ and ‘stressed out’. Workloads are overwhelming and we feel like drowning in a sea of hindering work tasks. But there are times that we feel like we are up to the challenge of the next project. We look for ways to make our job more interesting and inspiring and we jump at the opportunity of taking on more responsibility or joining a new team. Those are exciting situations, ‘challenge stressors’, that signal for us that there is an opportunity to learn and grow. This webinar will describe the basics of the stress experience, and explain how can we set up workplaces to promote challenges and minimize hindrances.

- That both demands and resources are important in relation to our perceptions of stress and our stress response
- How sources of stress in the workplace can be perceived as irrelevant, positive or stressful stressors.

M. Gloria González-Morales, PhD
Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Guelph, Canada, and Research Director of the Occupational Health and Positive Psychology Lab, and co-founder of the Centre for Workers' Health and Well-Being.
Dr. M. Gloria González-Morales is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Guelph, Canada, and the Research Director of the Occupational Health and Positive Psychology Lab, and co-founder of the Centre for Workers' Health and Well-Being.
Her research has been funded with scholarships and grants, including a prestigious Fulbright scholarship and funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. Her studies involve the disciplines of occupational health psychology and positive organizational psychology and focuses on stress, work-life issues, victimization, incivility and civility, and positive organizational interventions to enhance well-being and performance.
She is Associate Editor of Work & Stress Journal, and her research has been published in some of the world's top-ranked Psychology outlets such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Work & Stress and Journal of Organizational Behavior. In addition, she serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Stress & Health, Anxiety, Stress & Coping and Occupational Health Science. She has been recently awarded the 2017 best paper award of the European Journal of Work and Organisational Psychology for her research on respite workplace interventions to foster employee well-being.
Dr. González-Morales has more than 10 years of experience consulting for organizations from different sectors (i.e., government, healthcare, hospitality, non-for profit, energy, manufacturing). The last 7 years, as executive director of Organization & Management Solutions, she has led more than 20 consulting projects in diverse areas of practice: competency modeling and recruitment & selection systems, organizational development & change, needs analysis, performance management systems, engagement surveys, leadership & team development and training.
Jamie Gruman, PhD
Professor and Senior Research Fellow, Department of Management, University of Guelph
Dr. Jamie Gruman is a Professor and Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Management at the University of Guelph. He is also the Founding Chair of the Canadian Positive Psychology Association, an organization whose mandate is to improve people's lives by teaching them about the science of the good life.
Dr. Gruman is an award-winning researcher. He has published papers in some of the world's top-ranked business journals and is lead editor of the world's market-leading textbook on Applied Social Psychology. He is also the co-author of Boost: The Science of Recharging Yourself in an Age of Unrelenting Demands.
His work on topics related to positive psychology has appeared in academic journals such as Canadian Psychology, Human Resource Management Review, and Industrial and Organizational Psychology, in addition to books such as The Handbook of Employee Engagement, Advances in Positive Organizational Psychology, and The Cambridge Handbook of Workplace Training and Employee Development.
His research and writing have been reported by media outlets around the globe such the Deccan Chronicle in India, 36KR in China, and the Khaleej Times in Dubai. In the United States he has appeared in Time magazine, NBC News, Oprah Magazine, Inc Magazine, and Fast Company, among other outlets. In Canada he has been featured and quoted across the country in print and online in magazines such as MoneySense, Canadian Business, and Chatelaine, trade journals such as HR Professional, Canadian HR Reporter, and Public Sector Digest, and newspapers in every major Canadian city.
He has also appeared on CTV's Canada AM, Global News, Report on Business Television, CBC's The National, and has been syndicated on CBC radio.
